Running household chores through a group chat

Group chats are excellent at announcing and terrible at tracking. A message saying the bins go out tonight works once. The same message next week is buried under forty others.

What matters here

  • Everyone already has the app installed
  • Messages scroll away within a day
  • Nobody can see who agreed to what
  • Repeating chores have no home
  • A shared list makes the split visible

Why chat almost works

Chat has presence. People see it, respond to it and feel accountable in the moment. That is more than most chore systems achieve, which is why families keep returning to it.

Where it loses the thread

The failure is structural. A chat is ordered by time, and chores are ordered by recurrence. There is no way to ask a chat what still needs doing this week, so the same requests get repeated until someone gives up.

Splitting announcement from tracking

Announce in the chat if that is where people are, then put the actual chore in a shared list with an owner and a repeat. The chat stays social and the list stays accurate.
