Notes you cannot take with you

Export sounds like a technical detail until the app changes hands, raises prices or shuts down. At that point the lack of export is the only feature that matters.

What matters here

  • Your writing is only readable inside the app
  • Switching tools means retyping or losing
  • Backups are impossible to verify
  • Vendor changes become your problem
  • Markdown or plain text keeps notes portable

Why export gets skipped

Export is not a feature people choose a product for, so it is often deprioritized by the vendor. It is also hard to test, which makes it easy to break without anyone noticing until a customer needs it.

The realistic risk

Most apps do not vanish overnight. They get acquired, repriced or reworked, and each of those events is a reason you might want your notes elsewhere. The people who lose data are the ones who could not move.

A portability habit

Keep notes in a format you can read without the app, and export once a quarter to check that the export works. A backup you have never opened is a hope, not a backup.
