Chat threads as a task list

Using a group chat to coordinate work is natural, since that is where the conversation happens. The failure is subtle: the decision was made, everyone reacted, and the work quietly did not happen.

What matters here

  • Decisions get buried within hours
  • No owner unless someone claims it
  • No date unless someone repeats it
  • Search finds messages, not commitments
  • New members cannot reconstruct context

Where chat works

Quick coordination, unblocking, and the social glue that keeps a team functioning. Chat is good at conversation, and conversation is not a record.

Where it fails

Commitments disappear into the scroll. A message saying someone should look at this is not the same as a task, and the difference shows up a week later as a missed deadline nobody remembers agreeing to.

A small discipline

When a decision is made in chat, write it somewhere durable and say so in the thread. One line with a link is enough, and it takes less time than the argument about whether it was agreed.
