How much does self-hosting cost?
A small server, a domain and some backups will run a modest note app comfortably. What is not on the invoice is the evening you spend on an upgrade that went sideways, and that evening recurs.
What matters here
- A small virtual server is usually the largest cost
- A domain and TLS are minor or free
- Backups need somewhere to live
- Your time is the real recurring expense
- Cost per month is meaningless without the hours
The money side
Small instances are inexpensive, and a note app for a few people does not need much. Add object storage for backups and a domain, and the total stays modest. Anything with AI features may need outbound API credit too.
The time side
Expect a setup weekend and then an hour or two a month for updates and checks. The average is fine; the distribution is not, because one bad upgrade can consume a whole evening.
When it stops being worth it
If you dread the maintenance, the money saved is not real. A hosted free plan costs nothing and removes the on-call duty, which for many people is the better trade.

- How do I organize a small team?A small team needs fewer systems than it thinks. One place for work, one for conversation and one for decisions covers most of it.
- Why does my planner not work?A planner fails when it is disconnected from the work, when opening it is optional, and when it asks for more writing than the week returns.
- How to plan a job searchA job search plan is a weekly cadence, not a list of companies. Decide how many applications and follow-ups per week and protect the time.
