How to build a habit without an app
The reliable ingredients are a small action, an existing trigger and a visible record. None of those require software, and the absence of an app removes a source of friction and a source of abandonment at the same time.
What matters here
- Make the action absurdly small
- Attach it to something you already do
- Keep the record somewhere you will see
- Expect to miss, and plan the restart
- Two weeks of consistency beats a perfect plan
The trigger
After I make coffee, I write three lines. The existing habit does the remembering, which is why this works without notifications. Pick a trigger that happens every day whether you are motivated or not.
The size
Two minutes of the thing, not the full version. The point in the first fortnight is showing up, and a version you can do on your worst day is the only one that survives.
The record
A paper grid on the wall or a line in a notebook. The record is not for scoring, it is for noticing. If it starts making you feel bad, make it less visible rather than more detailed.

- How to track groceriesTracking groceries means two things: a list that is current before you shop and a rough idea of what is already at home.
- How to keep a gift listA gift list works when ideas are captured all year and each one names the person and the occasion. A list of links without names is a wish list.
- What is time blocking?Time blocking means giving a task a specific slot on your calendar instead of leaving it on a list to be done eventually.
