How to plan a trip

The plan should be readable on a phone in a hurry. That constraint shapes everything: short, structured, with the numbers you might need and nothing you will not read.

What matters here

  • Book the fixed points first: transport and beds
  • One note per trip with addresses and numbers
  • A pre-departure checklist with dates
  • One anchor per day, not an itinerary
  • Offline copies of anything essential

Fixed points first

Transport and accommodation determine everything else. Book those, then fill in the rest around them. Planning activities before the dates are fixed produces a wish list that has to be redone.

The trip note

Flights, addresses, booking references, the accommodation phone number and any transfer details. Keep it to one screen so it is usable when you are tired, and download it before you travel.

The pre-departure list

Check-in, visas, insurance, medication, pet care, bins, plants. These belong in a dated list tied to the departure, because they cluster in the last 24 hours and that is when things get missed.
