How to prioritize a long task list
A list of forty items cannot be prioritized, only filtered. The work is to reduce it to something where a decision is possible, and that reduction is what people avoid by reorganizing instead.
What matters here
- Delete anything you will not do this month
- Identify what has a real external deadline
- Pick the one item that unblocks others
- Ask what happens if this slips a week
- Choose three and ignore the rest until tomorrow
The deletion pass
Anything older than a month that keeps moving is a no. Remove it, and note that removing is reversible: if it matters it will come back, and it will come back with a real date.
Real versus invented deadlines
Many due dates are self-imposed and negotiable. Separate the ones with an external consequence from the ones you invented to feel pressure, and the list halves.
The unblocking question
If one item is stopping three others, it goes first regardless of how it ranks on importance. Progress on the rest is otherwise impossible.
