Prysm Note for budgeting

Budgeting usually fails at maintenance, not at maths. The plan is fine; nobody updates it. Attaching the update to a recurring task on a day you are already reviewing your week is what keeps it alive.

What matters here

  • Fixed costs as recurring items
  • A manual ledger for variable spending
  • One monthly review task
  • A note for the categories you use
  • Projections on the paid plan

Start with fixed costs

Rent, bills and subscriptions do not change much. Recording them once as recurring items means the monthly review only has to deal with the variable part, which is much smaller than it feels.

Recording spending

A ledger entry takes seconds if you do it as you go. Doing it weekly in a batch is slower and less accurate, because receipts get lost and small purchases get forgotten.

The review

Compare the month with the plan, note the one category that needs a different number, and change it. A budget that gets one honest adjustment a month improves; one that gets recreated from scratch never settles.
