What is a Gantt chart?
A Gantt chart answers when things happen relative to each other. It is the clearest way to see that two tasks collide, and the least forgiving format for a plan that changes daily.
What matters here
- Bars positioned by start and end date
- Dependencies drawn between bars
- Overlaps and collisions become visible
- Needs dates to be useful
- Heavy to maintain by hand
When it earns its place
Projects with real sequencing: a renovation, a launch, a move. Seeing that the electrician must finish before the plasterer starts prevents a costly assumption.
Why it dates quickly
A Gantt chart encodes a specific plan. When one bar moves, the ones after it should move too, and doing that manually is the reason these charts go stale.
The lighter alternative
A timeline view with tasks placed on dates gives most of the benefit without drawing dependencies. If the dependency is not real, you do not need to model it.
