What is a self-hosted app?

Self-hosting moves the machine, not the software. You install the app, keep it updated, back it up and secure it. In exchange you get control that a hosted service cannot offer.

What matters here

  • You run the server and the database
  • Data stays on infrastructure you choose
  • Updates and backups are your job
  • No per seat subscription in most cases
  • Uptime depends on your setup

Who it suits

People who already run a server and enjoy it, or organisations with a requirement to keep data in house. It is a poor fit if the setup would be the only server you have ever administered.

The ongoing cost

Hosting is cheap; attention is not. Patching, monitoring, certificates, backups and a restore you have actually tested are the real work, and skipping them is how self-hosting earns its reputation for losing data.

When to choose hosted

If you want the app to be someone else's problem, pay for hosted. Self-hosting is a trade of money for control and responsibility, and that trade is only good if you want the control.
