What is a task inbox?

A task inbox is the answer to a small but constant problem: you captured something, and you do not yet know when you will do it. Without an inbox you either invent a false date or leave the thought somewhere it will be lost.

What matters here

  • Capture without committing to a date
  • Review and schedule in one pass
  • Clear the inbox by asking the assistant to list or review it
  • Undated work stops polluting the today view
  • Bulk clear items you no longer intend to do

Why an inbox exists

Most capture happens before prioritization. Forcing a date at capture time means either guessing or delaying the capture, and both are bad. An inbox separates the two decisions: record it now, decide later.

The review habit

An inbox only works if it is emptied. A short regular review, where each item gets a date, a list or a dismissal, keeps it useful. Left alone it becomes another graveyard, which is the problem it was meant to solve.

Keeping the inbox honest

Make clearing easy: select many items at once, ask the assistant to show what is there, and delete without ceremony what you no longer intend to do. An inbox you can empty in two minutes is an inbox that stays empty.
