What is an AI assistant?
The difference between an assistant and a search box is action. An assistant reads your request, decides which operation fits, and changes something: creates a task, moves a date, drafts a reply, summarizes a note.
What matters here
- Takes requests in plain language
- Can act, not only answer
- Should show what it changed
- Needs your confirmation before destructive actions
- Works best with context it is allowed to read
Answering versus doing
A chatbot that explains how to reschedule a week is not an assistant. One that moves the tasks is. The second is harder to build because it needs access to your data and a model of what is safe to touch.
Trust and confirmation
An assistant that deletes without asking is a liability, no matter how accurate it usually is. The useful pattern is propose then apply: the assistant shows the change, you approve it, and undo stays possible.
What context changes
An assistant that can see your tasks, dates and notes gives better answers than one that starts from nothing each time. That access is also the privacy question, which is why provider choice and retention policy belong in the same conversation.
