What is speech to text?
Transcription has become good enough to be boring, which is the point. The remaining questions are where the audio is processed, how accurate it is for your accent, and whether you get the text in time to use it.
What matters here
- Converts audio into a text transcript
- Can run locally, in the browser or on a server
- Punctuation is usually added automatically
- Accuracy depends on accent, noise and vocabulary
- The transcript is editable text afterwards
Three places processing happens
The browser's built in engine sends audio to the browser vendor. A server transcribes with a hosted model. A local model runs on your machine and never sends audio anywhere. Each is a different privacy and quality trade-off.
What breaks accuracy
Background noise, several people talking, unusual names and accents the model saw little of in training. Speaking at a normal pace and staying near the microphone fixes most of it.
Transcripts are not notes
A transcript is what was said, including the false starts. Notes are what mattered. Using one without the other means either losing detail or drowning in it.
