What is the difference between an AI assistant and a chatbot?

The line is agency. A chatbot that explains project management is harmless. An assistant that can create, move and complete your tasks needs permissions, confirmations and a way to see what it did.

What matters here

  • Chatbots answer, assistants act
  • Assistants need scoped access to your data
  • Actions should be visible and reversible where possible
  • Deletion needs explicit confirmation
  • A good assistant still lets you work without it

What acting requires

Tools with narrow scope: create a task, not run arbitrary queries. Each call should be logged so you can see what changed and why, and the assistant should tell you what it did rather than leaving you to discover it.

The trust budget

Users forgive a bad summary. They do not forgive a silent mass delete. That asymmetry should shape which actions are available, and it is why destructive operations belong behind a confirmation step even when it feels slow.

Keeping the manual path

An assistant is a convenience layer. If the core app only works through conversation, you have replaced a tool with a dependency. Everything important should still be doable by hand.
