What is zero data retention?

When you send text to an AI model, it passes through a provider. Zero data retention is a routing policy where that provider does not keep the request and response after answering. It is one of the clearer privacy distinctions in AI software, and it is worth understanding precisely.

What matters here

  • Requests are not stored by the provider after the response
  • Distinct from whether content is used for training
  • Enforced by routing to providers that offer the policy
  • Does not replace local control of your own account
  • Can be set aside by bringing your own provider key

Retention and training are different questions

Two separate things get blurred together. Retention is whether the provider keeps your data. Training is whether it uses your data to improve models. A provider can retain without training, or train without long retention. Zero data retention is a statement about the first.

How routing makes it possible

Different providers offer different policies. A router can prefer providers that commit to zero retention for a given request, so the policy is a property of the path taken rather than a single company-wide promise. That is how Prysm Note approaches it.

What it does not cover

ZDR is about the external provider. Your own account data still lives in your workspace, subject to the app's own privacy terms. If you want the strongest say over the external path, bringing your own provider key gives you direct control.
