How much does an AI assistant cost?
Model calls are metered, so an assistant cannot be free forever at heavy use. The two honest models are a subscription that absorbs the variance, or bring-your-own-key where you see the bill item by item.
What matters here
- Cost scales with how much text you send
- Bundled plans smooth the variance for you
- BYOK shows the real cost per request
- Long notes and bulk operations cost the most
- Small prompts keep usage low without much loss
Why usage varies so much
A one-line question is cheap. Asking the assistant to restructure a month of notes sends a lot of text in one go, which costs proportionally more. Most people's usage is bursty, which is awkward for flat pricing.
The two models, honestly compared
A bundled assistant is predictable and you stop thinking about tokens. BYOK is cheaper at low volume and more transparent, but you manage a key and watch a second dashboard. Neither is universally better.
What Prysm Note does
You can bring a key from OpenAI, Google, DeepSeek or OpenRouter and pay that provider directly, or use the built-in assistant as part of the paid plan. The free plan works without either.
