How to prepare for a job interview

People over-prepare facts about the company and under-prepare their own examples. The interview is won on specific stories, and specific stories need to be written down and rehearsed once out loud.

What matters here

  • Write five stories with a situation and a result
  • Map your stories to the role's requirements
  • Prepare three questions worth asking
  • Research the product by using it, not just reading
  • Plan the logistics the day before

The story bank

Five examples is enough for most interviews. For each, note the situation, what you did and what changed. Write them once, then practise saying them in ninety seconds without notes.

Mapping to the role

Read the job description and underline the verbs. Match a story to each. Where you have no story, decide honestly what you will say instead of improvising a claim under pressure.

Questions and logistics

Three questions about the work itself, not the perks. Then check the link, the address and the time the day before, because logistics anxiety eats preparation.
