How to run a standup

The format works when everyone is standing, the questions are about the work rather than about people, and anything needing discussion moves to a separate conversation. Without those conditions it becomes a status report with extra steps.

What matters here

  • Fifteen minutes, same time, every day
  • Three questions: now, next, blocked
  • Park anything that needs discussion
  • Speak to the team, not to the lead
  • Cancel it when it stops being useful

The three questions

What I am on now, what is next, what is blocking me. The third is the only one that needs action, and it is the reason the meeting exists. The first two are coordination.

Parking detail

The moment two people start solving a problem, park it and take it offline with only the relevant people. Letting it run is how a fifteen minute meeting becomes forty.

Blockers need owners

A blocker that is mentioned but not assigned will be mentioned again tomorrow. Give it an owner and a next action before moving on, otherwise the standup becomes a daily recital.
