What is a daily note?

A daily note gives capture a default destination. Instead of deciding where something belongs, you write it on today's page and sort it later, or never, which is often fine.

What matters here

  • One page per date
  • A default place for quick capture
  • A natural log of what happened
  • Cheap to start, cheap to abandon
  • Useful with a small weekly tidy

Why the default helps

Decision fatigue is the enemy of capture. A page that is always there removes the question of where this goes, which is the moment most thoughts are lost.

A log, not a plan

A daily note records. It is not the same as a daily plan, though the two often share a page. Keeping the plan in tasks and the record in the note avoids pretending that writing something down scheduled it.

The accumulation problem

Three hundred pages of fragments are only useful if you can search them or if you review them. A weekly skim, moving anything actionable into tasks, keeps the habit from becoming an archive.
