What is a deadline?

A real deadline has a consequence attached. Without one, a date is a wish, and wishes are why task lists fill with items that have been due for weeks.

What matters here

  • A date plus a consequence
  • Set by an external commitment
  • Worth sharing with the people affected
  • Should be honest, not aspirational
  • Missing one is information, not a moral failure

Why deadlines work

A fixed date narrows options, which is what makes decisions possible. It also makes trade-offs visible: if two things are due Friday, something has to give, and that is better discovered on Monday.

The fake deadline problem

Inventing urgent dates for everything trains you to ignore all of them. Keep real deadlines real, and let undated work wait in an inbox where it does not pretend to be due.

When a deadline slips

Say so early. A deadline moved on Wednesday is a plan change; a deadline missed on Friday is a surprise, and surprises cost more trust than the delay itself.
