Why do I procrastinate on planned tasks?

When a task is on the list and still does not happen, the reason is rarely laziness. Something about the item makes starting expensive, and the fix is to lower that cost rather than to try harder.

What matters here

  • The task is a project wearing a task title
  • The first step is unknown
  • The task is boring and there is no structure around it
  • The environment makes starting hard
  • Shrinking the first action makes starting possible

Undefined work

Write the report is not startable. Outline three sections of the report is. The moment a task has a clear first action, the resistance often disappears, because the resistance was about not knowing where to begin.

Unpleasant work

Some tasks are simply dull, and no amount of decomposition makes them interesting. For those, the useful move is a short bounded block with a defined stopping point, so the cost is known in advance.

Environment

A task that needs quiet cannot be done in a noisy hour. Matching the task to the conditions you actually have, instead of the conditions you wish you had, removes a surprising amount of delay.
