What is a progressive web app?

A progressive web app, or PWA, closes most of the gap between a website and a native app without an app store. It is still the web underneath, which is both the appeal and the limitation.

What matters here

  • Installs from the browser to your home screen
  • Runs in its own window, without browser chrome
  • Can cache assets for offline use
  • Updates automatically, with no store review
  • Limited access to some device features

What you gain

One codebase, instant updates and no app store gatekeeper. For a tool you use daily, an icon that opens straight into the app is most of what people want from a native install.

What you give up

Deep device integration, reliable background work and push notifications vary by platform. On iOS in particular, support has historically lagged, so a PWA is not a universal replacement.

When a native app is better

If the product depends on background syncing, widgets, system notifications or heavy local processing, a native shell earns its complexity. Otherwise the PWA is usually enough.
