What is AI?

Artificial intelligence is an umbrella term, not one technology. What most people meet today is a language model that predicts plausible text, which turns out to be enough to draft, summarize, translate and sort.

What matters here

  • Learns patterns from large amounts of data
  • Produces a best guess, not a guaranteed fact
  • Works well on language, images and classification
  • Can be confidently wrong, so verification matters
  • Runs on someone else's computers in most products

What it actually does

A language model takes text and continues it in a way that matches its training. That simple mechanism covers summarizing a meeting, rewriting a sentence, extracting a date from a sentence and answering a question about a document you supplied.

Where it fails

It has no memory of facts it was not trained on and no way to check itself. It will produce a fluent answer to a question it cannot answer. Any workflow that matters needs a source of truth outside the model.

Why the data path matters

Most AI features send your text to a provider. Whether that provider stores it, trains on it or deletes it is a policy question, not a technical one, and it is worth reading before you paste anything sensitive.
